OXFORD — The Miami University Steel Band will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, in Hall Auditorium on Miami’s Oxford campus.
Special guests Oberlin Steel, from Oberlin College, and Rusty Burge, percussionist and jazz vibraphonist, also will perform.
The Miami band is directed by Chris Tanner, associate professor of music and founder and director of the Miami Steel band. Tanner will lead the groups in a performance of “Pan Night and Day,” by Trinidadian pannist and arranger Liam Teague.
The eight-minute arrangement, which features each section of the steel band in a “torrent of syncopated rhythms,” was performed in the finals of Trinidad’s annual Panorama competition in 2005.
Oberlin Steel, the featured guest ensemble, was formed in 1980 and plays in the tradition of the great steel bands of Trinidad, as well as salsa, calypso and jazz tunes and original compositions.
The group has made eight recordings in recent years. Co-musical director, Oberlin senior Ezekial (Zeke) Runyon, was a member of the Miami Steel Band in 2005 and 2006.
Guest artist Burge, professor of percussion at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), is as a member of Percussion Group Cincinnati, with whom he has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
Burge also directs the CCM Steel band.
