Miami University is offering a night at the opera three times this week with two one-acts that have something for newcomers and theater-lovers alike.
Audiences will experience two different operas – a comedy and a tragedy – as the university’s department of music performs starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 through Saturday, Nov. 21 in Hall Auditorium on the Oxford campus.
“You have two operas in one evening. That’s like a treat you’re not getting very often,” said Mihaela Bogdan, who is here from Romania.
“There’s something for everyone,” said Mari Opatz-Muni, director of Miami’s opera program.
The first opera of the night, “Suor Angelica,” is the story of a nun who must deal with a great person tragedy. It is performed in Italian and is “a different kind of love story. It’s the love of a mother that stays in the center,” Bogdan said.
The second, “Gianni Schicchi,” is a comedy performed in English about “a greedy, crazy Italian family – like a Sopranos family,” Bogdan said.
The operas, which are both less than an hour long, were composed by world famous Giacomo Puccini and premiered in 1918.
About 100 students from a variety of studies make up the chorus and orchestra in Miami’s performances.
Bogdan, who works professionally in opera in Romania, said she has been impressed with the work of the young performers.
“I have the joy of seeing young singers – some of them undergraduates, many new to the stage – becoming real actors and seeing them have fun with that they’re doing,” Bogden said.
Tickets for the shows can be purchased at the Miami University box office by calling (513) 529-3200 or going online to tickets.muohio.edu. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students.
