OXFORD — The Miami Art Museum has named a new curator of exhibitions, Jason Shaiman.

Shaiman, formerly chief curator of exhibitions at the McKissick Museum in Columbia, S.C., will begin Aug. 16 with the Miami museum, at 801 S. Patterson Ave.

Shaiman was a curator for nearly 10 years at the McKissick Museum, first as curator of traveling exhibitions and then as chief curator of exhibitions.

Since 2004, Shaiman was also an adjunct faculty member at the University of South Carolina and taught courses in art history and exhibition design.

In addition to his curatorial expertise, Shaiman has experience as a grant writer, exhibition preparator, art critic for the Aiken Arts Guild and juror for open exhibitions at Burroughs-Chapin Museum of Art and Sumter County Museum. He has also made numerous public presentations.

Shaiman has a bachelor’s degree in art history from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a masters’ degree in art history from University of South Carolina and a Certificate in Museum Studies from University of South Carolina.

In his tenure as chief curator he has overseen dozens of exhibitions, among them Southern Satire: The Illustrated World of Jak Smyrl and Off the Stage & Onto the Wall: The Evolution of a Ballet.

“Jason will be an outstanding asset to the museum staff and the university,” Robert Wicks, art museum director, said in a news release. “His wide range of experience in curating and designing exhibitions will enable the art museum to move forward in new directions.”
