OXFORD — The legendary Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will return to Miami University for the first time since 2005 with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at Millett Hall.

The orchestra, comprising 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1988. The ensemble is led by Wynton Marsalis, described as the most outstanding jazz musician and trumpeter of his generation.

“It’s going to be a great night,” said David Sheldrick of Miami. “He is one of the best jazz musicians playing right now.”

Marsalis and the ensemble were selected as part of the Miami University Performing Arts Series by a special board of students, faculty and community members.

About 1,200 people are expected to attend the concert, Sheldrick said.

The orchestra performs and leads educational events in New York, across the U.S. and around the globe in concert halls, dance venues, jazz clubs, public parks and with symphony orchestras, ballet troupes, local students and guest artists.

Marsalis represents America all over the world through jazz.

From Prague to Warsaw, Seoul to Wellington, Paris to Istanbul, Santiago to Mexico City, Toronto to Calgary, Amarillo to Portland, Marsalis can be found sharing his vision of the union of jazz and democracy.

Committed to encouraging the fine arts, the orchestra produces a year-round schedule of performance, education and broadcast events for audiences of all ages. Its educational mission encompasses 22 programs and resources that reach upwards of 50,000 people.

Its educational programs include the Middle School Jazz Academy, a tuition-free instructional program for New York City students, as well as the “Jazz for Young People concert series” and “Jazz in the Schools” tours that bring professional ensembles across New York City.

The event at Miami is sponsored by Gil and Joyce Gordon, The Knolls of Oxford and Kona Bistro.

The Ohio Arts Council helped fund the program with tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment.
