HAMILTON — Badin High School wrapped up its annual Canned Food Drive, delivering 4,207 cans of food to St. Raphael’s Food Pantry.
“This is always a special two weeks because, for the students, it’s a chance to accomplish something very substantive,” said Teresa Heinrich, Badin’s academic dean who helps oversee the effort on behalf of Student Council.
“This year the need seems greater than ever," Heinrich added. “This is a real world opportunity for Badin students to make a difference in their community.”
Badin students canvassed neighborhoods throughout Hamilton and Fairfield, asking for public support.
The canned food drive also counts toward Badin’s annual Spirit Week competition, which takes place in early 2010. Each class earns spirit points based on the average number of canned goods donated per student in that particular class.
Last year’s drive generated more than 6,300 cans. This year, however, the school came up a little short of its goal of 10 cans each from the 460 students enrolled there. No one was disappointed, however, because the drive came quickly after a special nonperishable food drive that resulted in another 4,200 items for the troops in the Middle East in the four-day run-up to a football game against Ross High School in September.
“We’re very pleased to be able to help the St. Raphael’s Food Pantry and so many families who will have a need over the holidays,” said senior Kellie Burton. “We love doing it. It’s very rewarding and it’s a lot of fun. It feels like trick-or-treating to go around asking for canned food.”
“Our students are always very active, and the community is very supportive,” Heinrich said.

Congratulations Badin students, for working hard to actually HELP out your community as opposed to blowing hot air like shunk - the only act he is apparently capable of doing.
