OXFORD — A self-serve yogurt shop – “the newest concert in dessert” – will open its doors in Uptown in February 2010.
BTO (By the Ounce) Self Serve Yogurt Shop will join Cold Stone Creamery, United Dairy Farmers, and Iggie’s as the city’s frozen treat options.
The frozen yogurt shop, though, will have a different atmosphere, with the customers actually being able to serve themselves.
Owner Gordon Kaiser said the Oxford location, at 26 W. High Street, would offer 12 different flavors of frozen yogurt with 12 to 20 different toppings available, ranging from fresh fruits to candies.
When customers come in to the store they will pick up a cup, fill it with as little or as much yogurt as they would like, choose a topping and then pay for the treat by the ounce.
BTO yogurt costs 39 cents per ounce.
Along with the unique service, BTO offers a healthy option.
“We’re a low-fat and non-fat product. We’re a healthier version, so to speak, and we’re a lot less calories,” Kaiser said of his products.
The store offers probiotic frozen yogurt, non-fat, low-fat and non-dairy products.
With a healthy product and a do-it-yourself store atmosphere Kaiser said he feels confident his store will do well, even with the other frozen treat establishments Uptown.
“You get 65-year-olds who come in and are suddenly five years old. They love it,” he said.
Economic development director for Oxford, Alan Kyger said, he also thinks BTO will do well, mainly competing with UDF since their product is similar.
“I would think if it cannibalizes anything it would cannibalize UDF because of the price similarities,” Kyger said. “People who get out of a movie or are walking Uptown are going to see the yogurt shop as an option now.”
BTO was scheduled to open in January, but has had a few problems getting building permits for its historical building.
Kaiser said he hopes to open the shop Valentine’s Day weekend.
It will be BTO’s sixth location to open, and the second in Ohio.
