OXFORD — Saving money, saving the world, being faithful and being efficient.
Many people dream of doing many of the things on that list. Now, thanks to the Oxford Interfaith Climate Change Work Group, Oxford citizens will have a chance to learn how all of those goals can work and fit together.
On March 26-27, the group will welcome the Director of Ohio Interfaith Power and Light, Greg Hitzhusen.
Hitzhusen is a professor at Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources.
According to the Ohio Interfaith Power and Light Web site, their mission is to “Empower a religious response to climate change and to promote energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.”
Hitzhusen’s visit will include three main events. The first will be a in lecture from 1 to 2:30 p.m. March 26 in Upham Hall Room 269.
The lecture will focus on the fact that the fastest growing environmental movement in America is faith community action.
Don Pestana, a member of St. Mary’s social justice group, as well as the Oxford Interfaith group, hopes Pestana’s voice will reach Miami students.
“He’s got an expertise nationally of dealing with faith and these issues from a more global perspective, and we wanted to share that with students,” he said.
Pestana also hopes the currency of this issue will draw interest.
“I think this is coming at a time when a lot of groups in Oxford have been thinking about this issue,” he said.
The second event is a screening of the award-winning film RENEWAL from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. March 26.
The third event will be a workshop at Holy Trinity Church in Oxford from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 27. Hitzhusen said at the workshop will respond to more of the moral and social justice reasons for environmental stewardship. Hitzhusen will also show energy saving tactics.
Jane Strippel of Holy Trinity Church wants everyone to know the workshop is open to the public.
“I’m really looking forward to him, he’s just excellent,” she said.
Pestana is interested in the workshop as well.
“We’re most interested in getting some real practical ideas on what we can do in our homes and churches to be more environmentally efficient,” he said.
