Boehner calls health care reform a ‘monstrosity’

While a health care reform bill may have been passed last week, U.S. Rep. John Boehner said he believes Washington is far from reaching any sort of consensus.

The House Minority Leader addressed a crowd of about 200 Hamilton area residents, business leaders and politicians during the Red Carpet Luncheon Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Courtyard by Marriott-Hamilton. The event was sponsored by the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.

Key points of discussion centered on national legislation that could affect businesses such as health care reform, cap and trade and the Employee’s Free Choice Act.

While Boehner was vague about the legislation passed by the House and mostly spent time outlining the pros of a Republican plan, he said there is “no disagreement in Washington that our health care system doesn’t work like it should.”

With 60 votes needed in the U.S. Senate to discuss the bill he said he believes it will be well after Thanksgiving before any movement is made. Two issues he foresees hanging up the issue entirely if it ends up in a conference between the House and Senate are whether taxpayer dollars should be used to fund abortions and whether benefits will be extended to undocumented workers.

“If we ever get a conference and we are ever able to put together those two issues, they may stop this monstrosity from ever becoming law,” Boehner said.

Mary Lynne Moorman, a resident of Colerain Twp. and an employee with Good Samaritan Hospital, drove up to hear Boehner speak and said she was disappointed he did not go into more detail about the passed House bill.

Moorman, who is undergoing her third treatment for cancer, this time breast, said she is anxious for some sort of reform to be passed.

“I understand these people without health care. I get the bills and I look at them and think oh my God I just don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have health care. I’d be bankrupt,” she said. “I just wish (the legislators) would stop arguing and just make a decision.”

Ashlee,

The fact that John Boehner keeps winning means that he is doing exactly what a majority of his constituents want him to do. I'm not a big fan of his, but if he wants to challenge this bullcrap Healthcare Reform he will get re-elected every time! We live and vote in a Congressional District that supports Capitalism and frowns on freeloaders.

Greatly Concerned,

We are finally on the same page about reaching a middle ground. Unfortunately I feel like this is going to be a hugely Partisan process and ultimately a disaster for America. The currrent Bill needs tossed out along with the current Congress.

This administration could have a shot at real Health Care Reform if the two bookends, Boehner and Pelosi, were removed from the process and banned from the media. Maybe a middle ground could be reached that would truly have a positive impact on the well being of Americans.
