Badin, Ross ‘battle’ to support troops

HAMILTON — The Badin and Ross high school football teams are scheduled to meet on the field Friday night, Sept. 11, but the real winners won’t be the team with the most points — it will be U.S. military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The teams will play at Virgil Schwarm Stadium in Hamilton and have announced a friendly “Battle for the Troops” competition between students to send nonperishable items to the troops stationed in the Middle East.

Members of Athletes Making Progress are spearheading the effort at Badin High School, while the student council is handling efforts at Ross High School.

“We’re renewing an exciting rivalry, while combining the spirit of the two schools to make a difference for those who are putting themselves in harm’s way for us,” said Mollie Marot, who oversees the AMP students at Badin.

Troopers are in need of personal care items — deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, baby powder, hand sanitizer, as well as packets of powdered fruit drink mixes for water bottles. Other items such as combs, playing cards and similar small games also are welcome.

Adults can bring items to the gate Friday night as well.

Doug Noonan, athletic director at Ross, said his school was “proud to be a part of such a good effort” and noted the significance of playing the game on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist bombings.

“We are really looking forward to being a part of that competition in a very positive way,’’ Noonan said, “which is going to have a good impact on people who are allowing us to spend our Friday nights enjoying high school football.”

An area troop-support organization will ship the items.
