OXFORD — Miami University received more applications for its freshman class of 2014 than the previous year.
To date, 16,862 first-year applications for the 2010 fall semester have been tallied, surpassing last year’s total of 16,806, said Director of Admission Laurie Koehler.
Koehler said the final count won’t be available until August.
The Miami Office of Admission uses a holistic approach for reviewing applications—taking in to account all aspects of the application together, such as high school curriculum, grades, standardized test scores, essays, extra curricular involvement. The office rarely makes a decision based on one aspect of the application in particular.
“We are looking at the whole student, if they are well-prepared to be successful here, and what they will add to our community,” said Koehler.
Applications, which were due Feb. 1, consisted of 51 percent Ohio residents and 49 percent students from out of the state.
This balance is, in part, a result of increased efforts by the university to increase both the diversity and the number of out of state students at Miami.
“Geographic diversity is positive for the student experience here, and is also good for Ohio’s economy as a whole,” Koehler said.
Recently, the topic of a possible future increase in students from the West Coast has sparked interest among the student body and Oxford community.
Koehler expressed a need to expand the target market of applicants from other regions, such as the West Coast, due to the predicted decline of high school graduation rates during the next decade from the Miami’s typical out-of-state pool, including Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
