OXFORD — Oxford Park and Recreation’s weekly after-school bowling program was recently recognized by the state.
The program, a partnership with Oxford Lanes, received an “outstanding” award in the state’s teen program category.
Every Wednesday when students are released from school early, Talawanda Middle School students are invited to spend the afternoon bowling and enjoying pizza and a drink for just $3.
“It gives students some to do that’s positive and a lifelong recreation,” said Will Reed, recreation program coordinator.
As many as 80 students attend the event on a given week during the school year. Students do not have to sign up ahead of time to attend the program, which is now in its second year, Reed said.
“I like hanging out with my friends and just forgetting about everything that happens at school,” said seventh-grader Lizzie Combs, 13.
Spending time with friends is a big draw for the teens, including Sidney Conatser, 12, who said she’s been bowling every week this year. She likes “being with my friends and having fun.”
“We don’t have to go home and do homework,” added 12-year-old Haley Kappes, a sixth-grader.
