ACS awards college scholarships to cancer survivors

Nine students from Butler and Warren counties have been awarded Youth Survivor College Scholarships by the American Cancer Society.

Funding for the scholarships is provided by proceeds from Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society’s all-night walk in which volunteers celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have died from cancer.

The $1,000 scholarship are awarded by a volunteer committee consisting of members from around the state. Overall, the cancer society awarded $67,000 worth of scholarships to cancer survivors around the state.

Here are the area scholarship winners:

Butler County

Lilly Appelfeller, of West Chester Twp., is studying political science/pre-law at The Ohio State University.

Jana Clear, from Hamilton, is studying marketing at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

Adam Gellenbeck, of Fairfield, is studying architecture at Miami University.

Scott Gilday, of West Chester Twp., will study computer science at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind.

Megan Metcalfe, from Hamilton, is studying business at Miami University.

Amanda Pike, of Trenton, is studying nursing at the University of Cincinnati.

Lauren Thorman, of Trenton, is studying elementary education at Miami University.

Warren County

Richard Griffin Jr., of Franklin, is studying mass communications at Wright State University.

Meredith Reeve, of Kings Mills, is studying nursing at the University of Cincinnati.
