What to do if you win the Powerball jackpot

Maybe you are among those who would use the money from a big Powerball win to cruise around the world after paying off your bills.

Maybe you’d open your own business or perhaps you would buy a great big house or three and six or seven Bentleys.

With the jackpot at a record $500 million for tonight’s drawing, a lot of people are having lottery fantasies.

No matter what the winner or winners ultimately decide, Ohio Lottery spokeswoman Marie Kilbane  suggests simmering down first.

“Take a few deep breaths, of course, to calm down,” she said. “This type of money is mind-blowing.”

Odds are heavily against you experiencing that feeling, though.

Kilbane says the odds of winning a $1 million prize is about one in 5.1 million. The odds at winning the jackpot is about one in 175.2 million.

Ohio joined the multi-state Powerball drawing in February of 2010 and has had two Powerball jackpot winners: $97 million on June 23, 2010, for a ticket sold in Curtice, near Toledo; and $260 million on June 2, 2010, for a ticket sold in Sunbury, near Columbus.

Ohio has had seven winners of Powerball’s second-tier $1 million prize in 2012. There were 16 winners in 2011, including a woman who purchased at Andes Drive Thru & Carryout in Fairborn.

All that said, no one would bother playing if they didn’t think they could win.

Here is a little advice from  Kilbane if you are that one in 175 million:

• Sign the back of your lottery ticket immediately.
• Put the ticket in a safe place.  Kilbane said it is up to the individual to determine where an appropriate place might be. Secure places include safes and safe deposit boxes.
• Talk to your financial adviser or attorney.
• Give yourself time to consider your next step.
• Go to one of the Ohio Lottery’s regional offices to claim your prize and fill out appropriate forms. It will take about four weeks to get your money.

Powerball facts

Still time to buy: Lines are probable today as outlets will sell the $2 tickets until 10 p.m. The drawing is at 10:59 p.m.

How to win: Players must match the numbers on five white balls drawn from a pool of 59, plus one of 35 red balls.

Payoff: The winner, or winners, can have the money placed in an annuity payable over 29 years. or take a lump-sum cash option. A single winner choosing the cash payout will take home $327 million before taxes.

Sharing the wealth: $1 of each ticket pays for prizes, with about a third for the jackpot and the rest for lesser payouts. The $1 goes to the lottery operations in the 42 states plus Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands where Powerball is played. In Ohio, after administrative costs are deducted — including compensating the 8,500 ticket-selling outlets  — the remainder goes to state education programs. Federal taxes take 25 percent of the jackpot.

Lucky 17?: There have been 16 bi-weekly drawings without anyone hitting the big prize. Powerball officials say the chance of getting a winner tonight is approaching 60 percent. It’s not a record: A $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March holds that distinction.
