OXFORD —
A total of 1,464 students in the Talawanda School District participated in Kids Voting USA mock election, held from Oct. 31-Nov. 6, and Republican candidate Mitt Romney was the presidential winner.
The election was part of the Kids Voting USA national, nonpartisan program, whose goal is to prepare young Americans to be educated and engaged citizens. The election was open to students in grades 3-12 at Talawanda high and middle schools, Kramer, Marshall and Bogan elementary schools and McGuffey Montessori School.
Talawanda Middle students voted on Oct. 31 in the early-voting process and most of the other students voted on election day after studying the races of selected candidates and issues by using the Voter Information Guide of the League of Women Voters of Oxford.
Romney, who lost the national election to President Barack Obama but won the popular vote in Butler County, garnered 460 votes from Talawanda high and middle school students to 366 for Obama. The results were closer on the elementary school ballot, which gave Romney a 306-273 edge.
Josh Mandel received 818 votes to Sherrod Brown’s 509 in the U.S. Senate race, Tim Derickson had an 829-560 advantage in the race for Ohio state representative, and Richard K. Jones had an 848-538 advantage over Dale Richter in the race for Butler County Sheriff.
Talawanda students voted against State Issue 1 (constitutional convention) 847-503, against State Issue 2 (redistricting) 800-546 and were emphatically against the Kids Issue (school year round) 872-544.
Following are the presidential election results for each school: Bogan Elementary — Romney 80, Obama 43; Kramer Elementary — Obama 150, Romney 89; Marshall Elementary — Romney 106, Obama 60; McGuffey Montessori — Obama 16, Romney 4; Talawanda Middle — Romney 346, Obama 282; ; Talawanda High — Romney 92, Obama 61.
