OXFORD —
The Taiwan National College of the Performing Arts will perform Peking Opera at the Oxford Community Arts Center at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The show is open to the public and free of charge.
Peking Opera, also known as Jingju, Beijing Opera, or Guoju, is a form of traditional Chinese theatre which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics.
Peking Opera costumes are graceful, with handcrafted embroidery. The make-up is rich in color, depicting different characters with remarkable facial painting. Children, as well as adults, will be fascinated with the costumes, make-up, music and movement of these talented young performers.
The Taiwan National College of the Performing Arts performs both A Spear Rack and Rhino Horns. A Spear Rack is set back in Song Dynasty when General Yue Fei confronted the Jin armies in ZhuXian Town. After the Jin General Wuzhu was defeated, he sent for his godson Lu Wen Long to assist in the battle. Lu’s military arts excelled all.
In this play, the young Lu’s valor and fierceness were displayed. He fought four people in a row single-handedly with extraordinary physical vigor, while brandishing double spears valiantly, demonstrating superb martial skills. Rhino Horns is a tale about the eleventh son of the White Beach who erroneously assisted the officials to defeat Green-face Tiger, Hsu Shih-ying, and he was falsely incriminated and incurred great danger. Meanwhile, his master, Cheng Lao-hsueh, also was charged and banished.
The Oxford Community Arts Center is located at 10 S. College Avenue. For more information contact the offices at (513)-524-8506, email info@oxarts.org or visit the website at www.oxarts.org. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on and Saturday.
