Boehner says Romney must focus on jobs

By Ellen Jervell

Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON —

House Speaker John Boehner Friday said that the resurgence in Ohio’s economy could help President Obama win the state this November, and urged presidential nominee Mitt Romney to focus more on the issue of jobs.

At a news conference on Capitol Hill, Boehner, R, West Chester Twp., said that “one of the things that probably works against Romney in Ohio is the fact that Gov. (John) Kasich has done such a good job of fixing government regulations in the state, attracting new businesses to the state. ‘’

“So our unemployment rate in Ohio is lower than the national average,’’ Boehner said. “As a matter of fact, I think it is a full point lower than the national average. As a result, people are still concerned about the economy and jobs in Ohio, but it certainly isn’t like you see in some other states.’’

But he appeared to criticize the Romney campaign for getting distracted from what Boehner sees as the key issue in the campaign – sparking an economic revival that will lead to more jobs.

“The Romney campaign needs to stay focused on jobs, their plan to create jobs and convince the American people that he, in fact, does have a plan that will put Americans back to work,’’ Boehner said. “This election is about jobs. It is not about anything else.’’

“The President’s economic policies have failed,’’ Boehner said. “So they can’t go out there and run on his record. He has got to try to make this election about everything other than his record.’’

Even as polls suggest that Obama is maintain a slim lead over Romney in key states such as Ohio, Boehner expressed confidence that the Republicans would main their control of the House in the November elections.

“We have done a good job getting our incumbents in good shape,’’ Boehner said.
