HAMILTON — Theater and history intersect tonight as the Fitton Center for Creative Arts hosts “Sacagawea,” a production by the Birmingham Children’s Theatre.
According to spokesperson Stacy Turner, the Birmingham Children’s Theatre is one of the country’s oldest and largest children’s theater companies, producing 10 plays a year and sending four of them on the road.
“We try to do a mix of programs and one or two of our shows every year will be based on history,” she said. “Because we are based in Alabama, we make sure that our historical productions meet the curriculum standards specifically for our state, so they are all historically accurate.”
Including, she said, the correct pronunciation of the main character’s name.
Because their road shows are typically performed in schools, the company offers study guides for each performance on its website, www.bct123.org, that are also available for families who see the show at venues like the Fitton Center to create follow-up activities for their children.
“Sacagawea” follows the Discovery Corps, also known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, centered on the experience of the Shoshone woman Sacagawea, who was married to a member of the exploration party as they travel 1,500 miles across the American continent, encountering a variety of American Indian culture, song and dance as they go.
Fitton Family Fridays is a series designed to feature entertainment geared to children of all ages, “including parents who are stills kids at heart,” said spokesperson Katie Daniels.
A preshow reception, included in the ticket price, begins at 6:30 p.m. with kid-friendly drinks and an assortment of appetizers.
