MILFORD TWP. — A pesky wasp may be at the root of a three-vehicle crash Thursday that sent six people to local hospitals with injuries.
Around 10:50 a.m., an adult female driving a PT Cruiser east on Ohio 73 reportedly lost control of her car and hit two vehicles head-on after attempting to swat a wasp away from her arm, said Butler County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Gebhart.
Gebhart said after the woman lost control of her car and went off the right side of the road, she over-corrected back onto the roadway and hit two vehicles after crossing the center line, according to a preliminary investigation.
A Ford Escape occupied by two adults and two juveniles rolled over once and slammed into a pole. The adult occupants were flown to area hospitals and the two juveniles were taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Deputy Brian Bussell said the occupants of the Ford Escape are from Cleveland.
Names of those involved in the crash have not been released yet, but Gebhart said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
The driver of the PT Cruiser and the female driver of the third vehicle — a Kia Rio — were also transported to area hospitals by medical helicopter.
The PT Cruiser came to a rest after crashing through a fence outside Butterfield Farm Market.
“We were clear in the back checking cattle and I heard a boom, boom,” said Bryan Butterfield, owner of Butterfield Market. “You could hear it loud and clear.”
Butterfield said he’s replaced the majority of the mile-long fence about three different times due to car crashes.
Mutual aid was received from Hanover, Reily and Milford townships and Oxford.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued.
