AURORA, Colo. —
Authorities are now saying that there are no more major threats in the apartment of shootings suspect James Holmes.
Dozens of law enforcement and safety officials began the first phase of detonating booby traps and incendiary devices inside the apartment around 12:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
The second phase of detonations began around 1 p.m.
Holmes is suspected in the fatal shootings of 12 people and wounding another 58 inside an Aurora, Colo. movie theater at a midnight premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises” Friday morning. After police arrested him, they visited his apartment and discovered the booby traps.
Around 10:41 a.m. today, Sgt. Cassidee Carlson speaking at a news conference near the apartment building told reporters there would be three phases to detonating the explosives. First, she said, they rendered the area safe.
The most immediate danger was the trip wire to the booby traps.
Controlled detonation may be ongoing throughout the afternoon and could include a loud boom and possible fire that erupts.
They are prepared to handle any situation, Carlson said.
In the next phases they will take care of disposal, including incendiary products, that will be placed into sand trucks and taken to a disposal site. A controlled detonation will occur at the disposal site.
The community will be made aware of all actions at the apartment building via robocalls and news announcements.
The third phase will be the thorough investigation of the apartment, Carlson said.
