Unemployment rates in Butler County in November came up by a tenth of 1 percent from October, as increases in holiday hiring were countered by decreases in employment in other industry sectors, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said Friday.

Butler County’s November unemployment rate was 6 percent, up from 5.9 percent in October, according to the state agency. That’s the same as 11,600 local people unemployed, out of a total civilian labor force of 191,900.

Local level unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted. Ohio’s overall seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 6.8 percent in November from 6.9 percent in October, which Ohio Job and Family Services previously reported.

“We did not see significant change statewide,” said Ben Johnson, spokesman for Ohio Job and Family Services.

Statewide, Ohioans saw 7,700 additional retail jobs from October to November, Johnson said. But the total increase in employment statewide was just 1,600 jobs month-to-month because of losses in other industries, such as administrative and support jobs, construction, and leisure and hospitality, he said.

In the Cincinnati metro, which includes Butler and Warren counties, retail trade added 3,600 jobs during the month. But with that, total employment was still down by 2,700 jobs from decreases in construction, small decreases in manufacturing, decreases in financial activities, and larger decreases in leisure and hospitality, Johnson said.

As a result, the entire Cincinnati metro unemployment rate last month was unchanged at 6.3 percent.

“There was in fact holiday retail hiring, but statewide it was largely countered by decreases in other sectors,” Johnson said. “What we really saw both at the state level and most counties was really only small changes. The job market in most counties and statewide was mostly unchanged from October to November.”

Looking back a year or more, unemployment rates have come down significantly. Butler County’s November 2011 unemployment rate was 7.5 percent, and it was 8.8 percent in November 2010, according to state figures. The whole Cincinnati metro’s November 2011 unemployment rate was 7.6 percent, and 9.1 percent November the year before.

Unemployment rates consider people who are without work, but actively looking for a job.
