Boehner calls former imprisoned congressman’s criticism of him ‘sad’

By Jessica Wehrman

Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON —

House Speaker John Boehner is unimpressed by formerly imprisoned Ohio Rep. Bob Ney’s criticism of him.

Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., was lambasted in Ney’s new book, “Sideswiped: Lessons Learned Courtesy of the Hit Men of Capitol Hill,” as being more interested in fundraising and partying than governing. Ney, R-Heath, described his fellow Ohioan as “a chain-smoking, relentless wine drinker who was more interested in the high life — golf, women, cigarettes, fun, and alcohol.”

We were one of only three news organizations that got an advance look at the book. Read our first story about Ney’s shots at Boehner here.

More pointedly, he wrote that Boehner had promised to help Ney find a new job and avoid legal fees if Ney resigned - but never delivered on those promises.

Boehner, in a Capitol appearance Thursday, brushed off Ney’s remarks.

“This is a disgraced congressman who went to jail,” he said. “He’s made a lot of baseless and false accusations in order to try and sell a book. It’s sad.”
