Lecture, luncheon at MU to celebrate Title IX

Miami University’s women’s center and the department of intercollegiate athletics in celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title IX with a special lecture at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Taylor Auditorium, Farmer School of Business.

Nancy Hogshead-Makar, three-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming and current professor of law at Florida Coastal School of law and senior director of Advocacy for the Women’s Sports Foundation, will speak on “The Personal, Political and Practical of Title IX.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Title IX is the landmark federal legislation that prohibits sex discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.

Hogshead Makar, an Olympic swimmer in the 1980’s, was so passionate about the need for women’s opportunities that she became a Title IX advocate attorney once she hung up her swim suit.

Also planned is the Luncheon with the Legends, hosted at the Marcum Center at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Many former Miami administrators, athletes and coaches will be in attendance for lively conversations and great story telling. Among those expected to be in attendance are Lil Fesperman, Gaby Downey, Theresa Shepherd, Lois Gleason, Candice Honroth Beaver, Susan Lipnickey and many others.
