Bibleway sets special service for Oct. 14

The First Pentecostal Bibleway Church at 100 Homestead Ave. will host a special service at 4 p.m. on Sunday with Bishop Henry Booker and the congregation of Praise Temple Community Church of Cincinnati.

On Nov. 2-3 First Lady Beverly A. Simmons will host a retreat for ages 18 and up. The theme is “Women Let’s Keep it Real.”

Candidates forum to be held Monday

A candidates forum will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Knolls of Oxford to give voters the opportunity to hear and to question candidates seeking election this November.

The forum will feature candidates for state representative, county commissioner, and other county offices and judgeships. The forum is sponsored by The League of Women Voters of Oxford and The Knolls of Oxford.

Part of Stephenson Road to close Monday

The Butler County Engineer’s Office reports that Stephenson Road in Reily Twp. will close 10 feet east of N. Law Road and 1 mile west of U.S. 27, or 0.6 mile west of Elgin Road, for a culvert replacement beginning Monday. The road is tentatively scheduled to reopen by Oct. 19.

Eastbound Stephenson Road traffic will detour south on N. Law Road, east on Stillwell Beckett Road, and northwest on U.S. 27. Westbound traffic will reverse this route. Motorists are encouraged to check the BCEA website for possible date and status changes concerning this closure at www.bceo.org/roadclosings.

Talawanda Fall Choral Concert is Wednesday

The Talawanda High School Choral Program will present a Fall Choral Concert as the inaugural performance for the new Talawanda Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The concert is under the direction of T.J. Pearson and is free and open to the public.

Vocal ensembles include the Show Choir, Concert Choir, “Fermata Nowhere” (a cappella group), Women’s Ensemble and

Chamber Singers.

The Talawanda Performing Arts Center is located in the high school at 5301 University Park Blvd.

Smoke detectors available in Oxford

During the month of October the Oxford Fire Department will have free smoke detectors available.

Please stop by the fire station to complete a participant application and pick up your free smoke detector, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You also may see Fire Department personnel in your neighborhood distributing fire detectors door to door during the month of October.

Trick or Treat in Oxford will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, the City of Oxford has announced.

Aliver Hall to perform on Oct. 20

The Stadium Bar & Grille in Oxford will host An Evening with Aliver Hall, an Akron-based jam/rock band, on Oct. 20. The doors open at 10 p.m. and the show begins at 11; fans over the age of 18 are welcome. There is a $3 cover charge.

The Stadium Bar & Grille is located at 16 S. Poplar St. and regularly hosts concerts by local and regional acts.

The Auxiliary of McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital will hold its $5 Jewelry Sale from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22 in the hospital lobby. Items available will include fun jewelry, including lots of fall items. All sales will benefit the hospital.

Leaf pick-up program to start Oct. 22

The City of Oxford will begin the annual leaf pick up program on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012.

Demo meeting in Oxford set for Oct. 24

A new Toastmasters Club in Oxford will hold a demo meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the LCNB Bank Community Room at 30 W. Park Place in Uptown Oxford.

Toastmasters International’s goal is to help people become a more confident speaker, give better presentations, improve their leadership skills.

Cooper to conduct class for women

Miami University men’s basketball coach John Cooper will hold a Basketball 101 class at Millett Hall from 5:15 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Millett Hall. The event for women is sponsored by Luna Blu Salon and Spa.

Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served on the Millett Hall concourse and participants will have a chance to meet and mingle with the RedHawk coaching staff.

Basketball 101 attendees will will be treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the facilities by the coaching staff and will have the opportunity to see members of the 2012-13 squad in action on the court as they conduct some practice drills. Cooper also will conduct a question-and-answer session following the practice drills. Participants will not be playing basketball at the Basketball 101 event, so gym shoes are not needed.

RECYCLING

Hazardous waste, tire recycling days set

Household hazardous waste can be recycled at the former Talawanda High School at 101 W. Chestnut Street in Oxford from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. Items which can be recycled include paint, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs, mercury-containing devices, automotive fluids and motor oil, batteries (household and automotive), varnish, pesticides and herbicides, antifreeze, propane tanks, acids, pool chemicals, adhesives and fire extinguishers.

Waste tires can be recycled at Ross High School, located at 3601 Hamilton-Cleves Road, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. All tire sizes will be accepted. Tires should be off the rim.

Both programs are open to all Butler County residents free of charge.

Fall story time programs are offered

The Oxford Lane Library’s story time programs for children ages 4-6 will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays through Nov. 27.

Toddler time for ages 2-3 will be held from 10:30 to 1 a.m. and repeated from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays through Nov. 28.

Baby Time for newborns to babies 11 months old will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on and for babies 12-24 months will be held from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays through Nov. 29 (except Nov. 22).

Family Time will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Fridays through Nov. 30.

Hamilton board seeks applications for Lane trustees

The Board of Education of the Hamilton City School District is accepting applications for an appointment to the Lane Public Library Board of Trustees.

The board consists of seven members. Terms are for seven years and one member’s term expires each year. An appointment will be made for a regular term of office beginning Jan. 1, 2013.

A majority of trustees shall be qualified electors of Hamilton City School District, but a minority may be qualified electors of Butler County who reside outside the school district. Members serve without compensation.
