OXFORD —

The Miami Oxford Organic Network’s sixth annual Harvest MOON Festival will feature a variety of fun and educational activities from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Uptown Memorial Park.

The celebration of local farms, fresh local foods and sustainable agriculture will begin with a homemade soup and salad lunch, including Pia Terranova’s breads, at 1 p.m. on the pavilion stage. Food will be available all afternoon or while supplies last.

Families are urged to bring the kids (young and old) to see Joe and Janet Streit’s farm animal exhibit from their Double J Farm, and to visit the cooking demonstration booth at 2:30 p.m. when Betty Quantz, former mayor of Oxford and popular vendor at the Oxford Farmer’s Market Uptown, will cook, and at 4 p.m. when Chef Barbara Stewart Smith from the MOON Coop Market will cook.

Visitors also can attend the informational talks on the pavilion stage. At 1:30 p.m. Dr. Alfredo Huerta, Miami University Botany Department, will speak on “GMO’s and food labeling laws in the U.S., California’s Proposition 37 takes center stage.”

At 3 p.m. Sidra McNeely of the Dayton chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation will speak. The Foundation is dedicated to restoring nutrient dense foods to the human diet through education, research and activism.

At 4:30 p.m. Harv Roehling, president of the local chapter of the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA) and local market gardener, will speak about organic growing and what organic certification means to the farmer and to the consumer.

Kids’ activities will include pumpkin painting and other crafts and games. There will be farmers from both the Oxford Farmers Market Uptown and the Talawanda Farmers Market with fresh produce and homemade foods.

Visitors can sit on a straw bale and enjoy the music of Amy Clay, Susan Pepper and Friends and enjoy a glass of homemade cider and some popcorn or cake. There will be educational booths featuring both student and community groups

Larry Slokum, longtime manager of the Oxford Farmers Market Uptown.
