MIDDLETOWN — Dustin Watkins and Maria Misquez — the two police say are responsible for the death of Christina Dunn — each had six-figure cash bonds set and public defenders assigned.

After Watkins and Misquez were led from the courtroom, the victim’s mother, Loretta Purdin-Morgan became ill and was aided as she dropped to the ground. Bailiffs cleared the courtroom and she cautiously walked out a few moments later.

On Sunday evening, Dunn, 27, of Middletown, was dragged and then struck by a car driven by Watkins on Moore Street. Misquez was a passenger in the vehicle.

Watkins, 23, of Harrison Street, was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia. Misquez, 31, of Baltimore Street, was charged with complicity to fleeing the scene of an accident. They were found by police at the Ranch Inn Motel, 4000 Tytus Ave.

On Wednesday morning they were in Middletown Municipal Court for an arraignment. Watkins’ bond was set at $210,000 and Misquez’s bond was set for $100,000.

Dunn leaves behind her husband, Michael Dunn, 30, and three sons, Jonathan, 9, Morgan, 8, and Brandon 5.

Shortly after Watkins and Misquez had left the courtroom Purdin-Morgan said to her husband she needed air. After staggering out of the court room pew, she appeared to be faint and then convulsed as she fell to the ground. Her husband, Jamie Morgan, escorted her from the courtroom.

Dunn was struck on Father’s Day after Watkins came to talk with Michael Dunn, a self-employed painter, about a painting job. The Dunns were standing on either side of Watkins vehicle, according to police. Michael Dunn said he hired Watkins for the job, but he allegedly never showed after receiving the payment up front. Misquez told Watkins to leave and Christina Dunn’s arm got stuck in the seatbelt and was dragged 40 feet before being run over by the vehicle’s front tire, according to police.

A preliminary hearing was not set, said Municipal Court Prosecutor Carrie Carpenter. Additional charges may come, and there may be a direct indictment for both Watkins and Misquez by the Butler County grand jury.

Middletown police have not yet filed any additional charges.

Arrangements are incomplete at Herr Riggs Funeral Home in Middletown. The family is seeking financial assistance to help pay for the funeral. Any donations may be made directly to Herr Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St.
