An acting superintendent has been named at Butler Tech, following the resignation of its current leader last week.

The Butler Tech Board of Education accepted the resignation of Brett Smith during a special meeting Dec. 22. At the same time, the board appointed Bill Miller as acting superintendent effective Jan. 1, according to spokesman Bill Solazzo.

Solazzo said the school board selected an acting superintendent from a list of current employees who have proper superintendent certification. Miller has been an employee of Butler Tech — Ohio’s largest career-technical school district — since August, serving as assistant director of curriculum.

“It’s an honor that they called and I’ll do what I’m asked to do to help move Butler Tech,” said Miller, who has 32 years experience as an educator in Butler County. He will serve as acting superintendent until an interim is announced.

Prior to joining Butler Tech, Miller had been the secondary curriculum coordinator for Fairfield City Schools.

The Butler Tech school board will meet next at 6 p.m. Jan. 9 to formulate a plan for selecting an interim superintendent for the remainder of the current school year. The board will also discuss a nationwide search for the next superintendent to lead the district that had more than 27,000 students last year.

“We are confident that during this period of transition, the staff, faculty and administration will continue to serve our students with the level of excellence that we have come to expect at Butler Tech,” Murray said.

Smith had served as superintendent of the career-technical school district since July 1, 2010. His last day will be Dec. 31, with an ending salary of $126,250.

“We’re grateful to Mr. Smith for his service to Butler Tech,” said Dan Murray, board president and representative from the Fairfield City School District. “Brett’s commitment to the success of the students of Butler Tech has been a constant and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Butler Tech was founded in 1975 and includes students from 10 associate school districts in Butler and Hamilton counties.
