Weather emergencies rack up record number of insurance claims

When it comes to damaging weather events, the Ohio Insurance Institute keeps a close watch.

The OII is a trade association representing insurance companies and agent groups for the property casualty insurance industry.

The Columbus-based association said insurance companies are reporting a record-high number of claims from September's windstorm. At least 131,624 claims have been reported so far from 24 companies participating in a survey taken last month.

Hurricane Ike struck the Galveston, Texas, area on Sept. 13 and was the fifth hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. The next day, winds from that system hit Ohio hard.

The storm affected 1.9 million insured residents, said Daniel J. Kelso, OII's president.

According to the association, counties south of Interstate 70 got the worst of it. Insurance claims were concentrated around the Cincinnati, Dayton and Central Ohio areas, OII noted.

The institute has compiled a list of damaging wind and hail storms going back to the 1974 Xenia tornado.

Here is the list:

  • June 8, 2007: Losses from the northeast Ohio hailstorm are at least $288 million.
  • Oct. 4, 2006: The most prominent storms produced hail and damaging winds across most of central Ohio. Preliminary estimates show that at least 45,444 claims for $239.6 million in insured losses were filed.
  • May 17, 21, 26 & 27, 2004: This series of May storms affected Canton, Northeast Ohio, Newark and the greater Dayton area. More than 44,000 claims totaled nearly $167 million in estimated insured losses.
  • April 20, 2003: This Easter Sunday hailstorm caused pockets of major damage throughout central Ohio. A survey in April 2004 found that insured losses were more than $230.5 million.
  • Nov. 10, 2002: This series of severe storms caused at least $91 million in insured losses from nearly 15,000 claims. Most losses resulted from tornadoes and high winds, but hail was also a factor.
  • April 9, 2001: A hailstorm in the Dayton-Kettering area caused at least $70 million in insured losses from about 27,575 claims.
  • April 9, 1999: An early morning F4 tornado that ripped through the Cincinnati area caused at least $66 million in insured losses from about 4,815 claims. Hail was cited in a number of claims.
  • April 3-4, 1974: The Xenia tornado super outbreak.
