An ultra-sophomoric California DJ cracked on Ohio recently during an interview with comedian Dave Chappelle.

The DJ went straight for the unoriginal: people who don’t live on a coast are toothless, simple and poor.

Essentially he called us boorish yokels.

In his mind, we all live in dilapidated trailer parks, spit tobacco in a communal coffee can and have straw hanging from our upper lips cuz why shucks, that’s what we backwoods, overall wearers do.

I, for one, was semi-offended.

I haven’t worn overalls or spit tobacco since doing so was hip in the mid-to-early ’90s (OK, can’t say I was ever “hip” enough to spit tobacco.)

Chappelle, who has a farm near Yellow Springs, defended the Buckeye State.

But really, why should he have had to?

Ohio is pretty sweet. Part of the problem seems to be that the rest of the country doesn’t know it.

There is no doubt that times are tough, but for goodness sakes, we are far from hairy palm mutants who capture city folk in the woods.

A lot of cool people live here and are from here. A lot of good still happens here.

Not that size matters, but this is the seventh most populous state in the nation and has six large cities — Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Akron, Toledo and Dayton.

Still, it seems we are the pretty-pretty princess constantly picked on by the hot jock that any day may fall into the ocean.

There is a clear need for a Clinton and Stacy-style “What Not to Wear” makeover.

I’d start with some spiffy tourism commercials and follow it with a new state slogan.

The current state slogan, “Ohio, So Much to Discover,” can’t hold a candle to “Wild and Wonderful, West Virginia” or “New Mexico, Land of Enchantment.”

Heck, Ohio is enchanting, too.

“Ohio, So Much to Discover” is so generic. There is so much to discover in the backseat of a filthy car, too.

Let’s get the ball rolling on a new state slogan:

• “Ohio, Can You Smell The Funk Our Rock N Roll is Cooking?”
• “Ohio, All the Cool Kids Are Born Here”
• “Ohio, Yeah, Try Flight Without Us, Sucka”
• “Don’t You Wish Your Girlfriend was Hot like Ohio in the Summer?”

They need a little work.
