When it comes to finding the one, sometimes you just know. Sometimes you think you know. And you’re wrong.
Mignon: My high school boyfriend looked great on paper. We went to the same church, same high school. Heck, we even made our first communion together. I was mad, crazy about him, and he was crazy about me.
Alas, we drifted apart when I went to college. I’d heard through the grapevine that he’d married. Then, 30 years later, through a strange set of circumstances, we reconnected. He was unhappily married to wife number two.
I tried to be his friend, purely platonic, but it didn’t work out. His marriage couldn’t handle an ex-girlfriend in the picture, and he put a kibosh on the friendship. It made me sad. I wanted my husband to meet him, and I was dying to meet his wife. She was the exact opposite of me — tall, blonde and slender. I’m more like Ina Garten.
We never did meet up. Every now and then, I still think of him because he was my first real reciprocated love, but I realize I dodged a bullet and am so thankful to have my husband.
He doesn’t look good on paper. He’s an atheist; I’m a cradle Catholic. He’s a redneck; I’m a Democrat. He’s a hunter; I hate guns. You get the picture. But we’ve been together for 16 years and have survived some major stresses and hurdles — parents dying, job losses, health issues. He’s a keeper and I love my Eagle Scout!
Mickey: I was 21 and a little lost. It was a Friday night. The guys usually met at a bar in Crete, Ill. We’d have a few drinks, then decide where to look for girls. Usually, we headed to Chicago. This night, one of the guys said he’d heard about a dance 40 miles away. We took a vote. There were five guys. I was the only no vote, so I had to sit on the hump in the middle of the back seat in a four-passenger Mustang. Off we went.
To my surprise, the place was really nice. There were a lot of girls and a great band. The place was crowded. I looked around the room checking out the girls. That’s when I spotted her — a long-haired brunette with a great tan and beautiful blue eyes. I am usually a little shy around girls, so I told my friend to go over and ask the blonde that the brunette was sitting with to dance. My plan was then to go ask the brunette.
My friend went over to the table and asked the brunette to dance. I stood up on the table and screamed at the top of my lungs, “I told you to ask the blonde!”
That’s how I met my wife. We were together the rest of the night. I told her I was going to marry her. She thought that I was crazy. It took me a couple of months to convince her, and we were married two years later.
We were married for 37-and-a-half years. We had three children and five grandchildren. Unfortunately, she died in 2009. It’s been extremely difficult without her, but I have my family and all of those wonderful memories!
