Christmas is the time to give unconditionally

By Tonya Lee Carrie Fancher

As we get closer to celebrating one of the most favorite holidays of the year, Christmas, let us remember the reason for this season.

Christians and non-Christians alike celebrate Christmas. We as Christians believe Jesus is the reason for this season. God gave to us his only son as an expression of his unconditional love. This day symbolizes Jesus Christ’s birthday and became a federal holiday in 1870.

Already this holiday season, the Jewish celebrated Hanukkah, known as the festival of lights, commemorating the Holy Temple.

Another upcoming special celebration, Kwanzaa, will be celebrated for a week, from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, in honor of the African heritage.

No matter what and how we celebrate, this is the time of the year when compassion fills the atmosphere. This is the time to give unconditionally, especially to the less fortunate.

If the truth is to be told, most of us love and give conditionally, hoping we will receive what we give. But there’s something extra special that resonates within our hearts when we give without any expectations.

Holidays for many are very challenging for a myriad of reasons — the loss of a loved one, income or a home. Regardless of these challenges, we as people of faith can grab hold to compassion. We have a choice to look outside of ourselves by thinking of others less fortunate, creating good memories that will last for a lifetime. This is resiliency. One moment we may look from within, but soon as we think outside ourselves, we will have the opportunity to experience peace, and then joy will rise.

Love is kind, love protects and God’s love gives unconditionally. In spite of how the economy may be affecting our pockets, we can give our love in very creative ways. We can give our time to a unique cause or make something by hand. Homemade items never go out of style. Matter of fact, for some they are more appreciated because of the time spent to make them.

Living with Hope during this Christmas holiday season as people of faith:

• Do not allow the economy or life challenges to discourage you from giving.

• Give unconditionally.
