The H1N1 flu, also known as the swine flu, has increased the focus on this year’s flu season.
But, while the swine flu vaccine is not expected until the fall, the seasonal flu shot is available at many area drugstores as of Tuesday, Sept. 1. And a few of those drugstores are offering deals to the uninsured and unemployed.
Thomas W. Skinner, a senior public affairs officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said flu vaccine guidelines have not changed.
The CDC recommends to vaccination for ages 6 months to 19 years, pregnant women, people 50 and older, anyone with certain chronic medical conditions, nursing home residents and health care workers or others who live with or care for those at high risk for complications.
Skinner added: “Anyone who wants to prevent getting the flu can get vaccinated.”
According to the CDC, about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes each year.
CVS/Pharmacy has flu shots available daily without an appointment at most locations. The pharmacy said Monday that it will offer 100,000 fee seasonal flu shots to job seekers.
CVS will hold flu shot clinic events at many of its stores starting Sept. 15.
Flu shots also are available at area Kroger stores by appointment by calling (866) 435-8746.
Walgreens and Rite Aid recommend calling ahead to check on whether your store is participating and the availability of the pharmacist.
Walgreens reported that it will provide $1 million worth of seasonal flu shots to uninsured adults via vouchers on a first-come, first-served basis.
The seasonal flu shot costs around $24.99, and the nasal-mist vaccine around $29.99. Many insurance plans cover the cost.
