Column: I tried an Adventure Boot Camp class

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Every time I watch a weight loss reality show, I have a little more inspiration to get moving.

But watching those shows, buying the guide books, attending lectures, reading women’s magazines and joining online support groups doesn’t do the job. I have to actually put my body into motion, and eat healthy food.

I don’t want to, though. I like bad food. I am comfortable reading and watching instead of doing.

As I read a news article featuring Tri State Adventure Boot Camp and Fat Camp Retreats, I felt that inspiration, but this time there was more reality involved. This program is something right here, in town, not recorded for my friends and family to judge — I mean watch — and that’s accessible to any woman.

Like many other 30-somethings, I am motivated to change my life for various reasons. So in the style of the movie “Yes Man,” I didn’t put thought into it and just said I would go. What did I have to lose? I don’t sleep well, because I’m fat, so I would already be up.

I was there at 8 a.m. Saturday as required. The introvert that I am not, really, was there when I first went inside. I mean, it was 8 a.m. and I didn’t know a soul. And I certainly don’t know tough workouts.

But I wasn’t the only first-timer or exercise hater there. I learned that because this group was happy and enthusiastic. The social aspect was as fulfilling as the workout.

One woman has lost 70 pounds since August. Let me say that again, and louder. SEVENTY POUNDS. Impressive. Many others there had large weight loss numbers, and the pride that should rightfully come with it.

Once about 20 women gathered, Kristi and Ryan instantly got us moving with running laps. I am not embarrassed to admit that I walked many of the laps. I’m disappointed, but it was my first time. And Ryan reminded me of that.

Participants partnered on core exercises. (My partner Beth was a trooper, waiting for me to catch my breath or regain my footing when I needed to.) We got short water breaks but never stopped moving.

There were a few times I felt like vomiting or passing out. And Kristi and Ryan both said to me, “This is the start.”

As much as I wanted to stop, I didn’t. I took a lot of breaks, and there was no Jillian Michaels yelling at me — just two local training professionals with big hearts and words of encouragement.

Would I go back? Absolutely.

They are right, it’s the start.
