Hillel to dedicate new kitchen Friday

After 34 years and hundreds of Shabbat and holiday dinners, the kitchen at The Beerman Jewish Student Center at Miami University, 11 E. Walnut St., in Oxford was no longer functioning and needed a complete renovation.

Now, thanks to a generous grant from the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati and a gift from the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, as well as smaller individual gifts and a donation of cabinetry by Moeller Industries of Cincinnati, the Jewish community at Miami University will be able to prepare their Passover Seders in their new kosher kitchen.

Members of the Hillel community at Miami will dedicate the kitchen today, Friday, April 24. The dedication will be held at 7 p.m. with dinner to follow. The dinner will be prepared by longtime Hillel chef Paula Duncan as well as student-led Shabbat services, greetings, songs and celebration.

This event is open to the entire community.

“Joining together on Friday nights and holidays is one of the most important aspects of our life here as a Jewish community on campus,” said Diogo Metz, Association for Jewish Students President and Miami Hillel board member.

“Shabbat is a time when students can come together and take a moment to step back from their hectic lives on campus. This introspection with peers helps to foster a strong Jewish community,” added Hillel Director Tal Rosen.

Rosen expressed thanks to the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati and the Cleveland Federation for their support but also to a neighbor on Walnut Street.

“We also want to offer a special thanks to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Oxford and the Rev. Karen Burnard who helped us during this past year by granting us use of their kitchen facilities. Rev. Burnard, her staff, and her parishioners have exemplified the value of hachnasat orchim (welcoming the stranger) that is a pillar of our Jewish community at Hillel,” Rosen said.
