The Back Porch Hounds, a southwestern Ohio roots band, will provide a sneak-peek of its first recording project at next week’s Music Cafe.

Members Frank Fitch, Dennis Henderson, Fred Hautau and Dale Farmer bring diverse musical backgrounds of bluegrass, blues, jazz, old time and Celtic together to preserve the past and pave new sonic roads, Farmer said, and are in the process of “ tweaking forgotten obscure old tunes and original material for our first recording project.”

Music Café guests will hear traditional spirituals and original instrumental tunes in musical styles ranging from Lightnin’ Hopkins to Ralph Stanley.

“Listeners will be be taken back a couple centuries with a Scottish medley that’s become very popular with Hounds’ followers,” Farmer said.

Samples of their music can be found at www.thebackporch hounds.com.

Also on the bill, Columbus-based duo Timid Blue combines the talents of a singer/songwriter with a classically trained pianist. The group has drawn comparisons to the Swell Season, Damien Rice and the Civil Wars.

“Recently we have been playing shows around Columbus and are currently working on recording an EP within the couple months,” said Noah Jellison, one-half of the duo. “We take a very simple setup of just piano, guitar, and vocals, and write songs that tell our own personal stories.”

Noah plays piano. Steve Shanks plays guitar and sings. Steve writes some lyrics. Noah writes a lot of music. Steve writes a little music. Some rough previews of the EP have been posted on-line at www.reverbnation.com/timidblue.

The trio Dan Meg and Peg will be making their first-ever performance at the Music Cafe, though its members are no strangers to the scene.

Peg Buchanan of the Sweeney’s and Dave Hawkins Band has teamed up with Dan Walz and his daughter Megan.
