Now that the Christmas season is in full swing, some people might be forgiven if they occasionally want to forgo the hymns and Dickens in favor of some alternative, adult fun.

Enter the Know Theatre, a Cincinnati venue for underground productions, and a local improv group called OTRimprov. “The Naughty List,” which will be performed at a popular downtown Cincinnati tavern, is a 90-minute collection of three highly interactive improvs.

“We’ve done only a couple of nights so far, and it’s early in the week,” said Eric Vosmeier, producing artistic director for the Know Theatre and the show’s director. The show is presented only on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. “It’s not a heavy drinking crowd like at a comedy club, but people have been having a good time so far.”

After an initial “shortform” improv to get the audience warmed up, the first of two “longform” improvs retell a classic holiday story in a humorous fashion. Four wrapped presents, representing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Carol,” are presented onstage. The audience votes on which present they want to open. Once the story is revealed, an audience member is summoned onstage to give their best recollection of the story’s plot. The improv cast then re-enacts the story according to the audience member’s memory.

“We hope for huge mistakes and embellishments,” Vosmeier said. “Luckily, we spend a great deal rehearsing, so we’ll have contingencies in case (the audience member) freezes or remembers it so inaccurately that we have nothing to work with.”

The final longform improv is called “The Best Christmas Never,” in which an audience member is chosen to reveal the one Christmas gift they longed for but never received, and the improv team launches into an extended skit on what their life would’ve been like had they received that present.

The Know Theatre’s own space is currently occupied by another show, which is why the Know folks took “The Naughty List” to Arnold’s Bar and Grill, which includes an indoor/outdoor patio that’s covered and heated in the winter.

“Somehow it became the de facto theater bar in Cincinnati,” Vosmeier said. “It has this cool patio with the stage built into it. It’s one of the oldest and least expensive bars in Cincinnati.”

Vosmeier and his team spent five to six months developing “The Naughty List.”

“There are a good number of Christmas scripts, but a lot of them aren’t very good,” he said. “We wanted to do something funny and light. It’s not like anything else, and it is very adult. We’ll tone it down if we see families, but we typically don’t see too many kids at Arnold’s.”
