THINGS TO DO

Fireworks broadcast gets closer

Move cozies up to Riverfest

By Aaron Epple

The Cincinnati Bell/WEBN Fireworks at P&G Riverfest are set for Sunday night, and one of the sponsors is mixing it up a bit.

“We’re moving the live broadcast to the Lower Serpentine Wall,” said Justin Tabas, WEBN-FM’s (102.7) executive producer for the event. “We thought it was a good way to freshen things up and give a new feel to the event. It also makes logistical sense. Riverfest is already over there, and it lets us be closer to our people and our clients.”

One of those clients is Jester Jewelers, participating in a promotion called Get Rocked, in which one lucky man will win a free engagement ring.

“Somebody will get engaged, or rocked, at the fireworks,” Tabas said. “Actually, I should say, someone will get proposed to. I can’t say for sure whether they’ll get engaged.”

Naturally, this enormous, annual Labor Day party encompasses more than just one venue. Newport-on-the-Levee, the popular dining and entertainment complex across the river in Northern Kentucky will be holding their own event. There will also be several Cincinnati area taverns holding firework-themed blasts. These establishments aren’t associated with the fireworks, Tabas said, they’re just places for people who want to enjoy the fireworks but also want to drink, since the fireworks has been alcohol-free for 10 years.

“Because we do this in conjunction with the city, we want to make sure it’s family-friendly,” he said. “So we can all enjoy it together.”

To that end, there will be two family fun zones, featuring carnival elements and carnival food, though there will be the usual burgers, fries, slushies, shaved ice, Skyline Chili and Donato’s Pizza, all against a backdrop of live music exclusively by local bands.

“There will be live art displays and giveaways from the stage,” Tabas said. “We’ll be interviewing people about their experience and upgrading people to front-row seats all day.”

Some of the other contests include a chance to fly into the event via helicopter, light the actual fuse to get the fireworks going, watch the entire display from the barge where the fireworks are set off, or win an all-access VIP package.

In the meantime, WEBN listeners can submit request for songs to be played up until the fireworks start.

“We get a mix of everything,” Tabas said. “ ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ is a typical one. That’s such a Cincinnati song, because of the Bengals.”

Throughout, Tabas’ explanation for how the Labor Day fireworks tradition has surpassed all local Fourth of July events in terms of pyrotechnics is simple.

“Nobody throws a party like WEBN,” he said. “It started out as an anniversary party, and the rest is history. The fireworks show is like being in a theater with surround sound. So much work goes into just the soundtrack. It’s a combination you won’t find anywhere else.”
