Empty Bowls, a benefit soup luncheon dedicated to hungry people in the Oxford community, is returning to Oxford on Miami University’s Homecoming Weekend from
11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24.
Empty Bowls was created in 1990 by a Michigan art teacher looking for a creative way for his students to support a local food drive.
This idea grew, and in the 19 years since its inception, Empty Bowls has grown into an international event, raising millions of dollars worldwide toward hunger relief.
Now in its seventh year locally, Empty Bowls is the literal product of many diverse hands working together to create an event that will provide much-needed funds for the Oxford Community choice Food Pantry.
The skilled hands of Dennis Tobin’s Miami University ceramics class along with those of Oxford-area potters make and donate all of the bowls for the event; soup, bread and dessert makers from local churches, including the Oxford Friends Meetings (Quakers), the Oxford United Methodist Church, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the Hopedale Unitarian Universalist Community, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and The Oxford Presbyterian Church provide most of the day’s delicious food, with additional valued contributions from Miami’s Carillon Catering, Oxford Skyline, Kroger and the Knolls of Oxford.
Decorations for the event are created and provided by some of the community’s youngest hands, with artwork on display from Liz Woedl’s upper grade art classes at McGuffey Foundation School and Diane Stemper’s “After School Art” students at the Oxford Community Arts Center.
Oxford Empty Bowls will be held in the fellowship hall of the Oxford United Methodist Church located at the corner of Poplar and Church streets.
At the luncheon, guests choose from a collection of beautiful, handmade bowls, which are then filled with their choice of soup and served with homemade bread and beverages.
Luncheon guests then keep their bowls to use or display at home and to serve as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world.
