HAMILTON — Former Middletown High School football and track standout Dwayne “Deejay” Hunter Jr. has pleaded guilty to felonious assault.

The charge — to which Hunter pleaded guilty Thursday, July 30 — stems from a BB gun shooting on Jan. 12 in which a boy was hit twice in the face.

It carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison. A presentence investigation will be conducted before Butler County Common Pleas Judge Andrew Nastoff. His sentencing has been scheduled for Sept. 17.

Hunter, 18, remains behind bars in Middletown. Nastoff revoked his bond.

“(Hunter) stepped up,” said Hunter’s attorney, Frank Schiavone, after court. Schiavone said Hunter is a smart, fine young man who has the potential to be great.

“He made a terrible mistake, and is paying for it,” he said.

Hunter is scheduled to stand trial in August on misdemeanor charges of unlawful restraint and assault — from an alleged attack on a former girlfriend, Samantha Abney, 18, after the school’s prom in May — and violation of a protection order.

The latter charge came June 10 when Abney visited Hunter’s 15th Avenue home at 12:30 a.m. The incident landed Hunter in jail again after he had been free on bond.
