HAMILTON — Butler County Sheriff’s detectives and the Butler County United Way are warning area residents a man is seeking donations posing as a collector for United Way.
The man, officials said, is carrying a large bucket, knocking on doors and stating he is soliciting donations from the organization. United Way says it does not solicit donations door-to-door or encourage supporters to do so.
Detective Ron Owen said he has been contacted by three residents of a subdivision on Ohio 747 and Kyles Station Road in Liberty Twp. about the suspect who was asking for “spare change” donations between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday.
“We have had some burglaries in that area recently and we are not sure if he is checking out houses or collecting for personal gain,” Owen said.
Witnesses have described the suspect as a black male about 5 feet, 10 inches tall with short hair. He is carrying a large, dirty bucket with a United Way sticker on it, Owen said.
Owen urged residents to ask for identification from anyone who shows up at their home soliciting for donations or repair work. If possible, call the organization to verify the information.
“Any person legitimately with the organization will have no problem doing that,” he said.
Anyone with information about the incidents or the identity of the person is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (513) 785-1300.
