HAMILTON — Two 17-year-old boys and a 22-year-old woman are facing felony charges accusing them of theft and the beating of a baby alpaca in Madison Twp., according to Butler County Sheriff’s detectives.
One of the boys appeared Monday, March 1, with his attorney, Paris Ellis, in county Juvenile Court for arraignment. The teen, arrested Friday, faces charges of animal cruelty, breaking and entering, and tampering with evidence. He was ordered into detention until a hearing at 11 a.m. March 11 before Judge Kathleen Romans.
The second 17-year-old, arrested Monday, faces the same charges. He was set to be arraigned in Juvenile Court at 8:30 a.m. today, March 2.
Both boys, who live in the township, had dropped out of Madison High School, detectives said.
Police on Monday also arrested Stacie Mullins, 22, who lives on Kalbfleisch Road. She was charged with complicity to animal cruelty, complicity to breaking and entering and complicity to tampering with evidence, sheriff’s Lt. Mike Craft said.
Mullins was booked into the Butler County Jail and released on a $15,000 bond. She is to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Police declined to elaborate on her connection to the boys.
The 3-month-old alpaca, named Masterpiece, was reported stolen Feb. 19 from a farm in the 1700 block of Browns Run Road in Madison Twp. Jeffrey Pergram, who reported the animal missing, told deputies the theft occurred Feb. 5.
Deputies said the suspects fatally beat Masterpiece, valued at $8,000, took its body away in a truck and dumped it in an abandoned barn on Elk Creek Road in Montgomery County.
Craft said the suspects were all in the truck when the alpaca was dumped.
