Shoplifting mother caught with parenting book
A 37-year-old Oxford woman was arrested Jan. 2 for allegedly shoplifting a parenting book while accompanied by her two young children.
Callie Rough, 5032 College Corner Pike #38, reportedly entered the Dollar General Store on College Corner Pike along with James Rogers and their two children. An employee told officers the four seemed to act suspiciously while in the store, but it wasn't until they attempted to leave that she noticed Rough's purse appeared to be noticeably larger than it had been minutes earlier.
Rough reportedly refused to allow the clerk to search her purse, then ran to the back of the store and began unloading stolen items from the bag. As the four subjects fled from the store, the clerk said Rough threw an additional handful of items at her.
The clerk told police Rough had concealed wash clothes, small hand towels, a small rug and a book entitled "101 Ways to Be a Great Mom" in her purse.
Police located Rough, Rogers and their children running along College Corner Pike in front of the Hampton Inn. Officers spoke with the family and placed Rogers under arrest after learning of an active warrant out of the Butler County Sheriff's Office for a traffic violation. Rogers reportedly had a package of garbage bags hidden on his person, which he told police Rough had given to him.
Rogers was issued a citation for receiving stolen property and turned over to the Butler County Sheriff's Office. Rough, who had an active warrant out of the Monroe Police Department, was charged with theft and later released.
Fleeing suspect tells police escape route was a shortcut
A Collinsville man allegedly fleeing police over a domestic dispute said his evasive maneuvers were little more than a shortcut through Oxford.
Jerry Bicknell, 4958 Huston Road, told officers he had frantically pulled into the employee parking lot at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital simply because it offered a terrific shortcut from Oxford to Collinsville.
Bicknell had fled from a College Corner Pike residence late in the evening on Dec. 29 after officers were dispatched to a reported domestic dispute. While en route to the residence, officers passed a vehicle matching the description of Bicknell's headed in the opposite direction at a high rate of speed.
Police followed the truck as it sped through Oxford, then watched as the 48-year-old driver parked the truck at the hospital and attempted to abandon the vehicle. Officers spoke with Bicknell, who denied having been at the residence or encountering any problems there.
Additional officers questioned the 44-year-old victim, who said former boyfriend Bicknell walked into her unlocked apartment and began arguing with her. He allegedly pushed her several times, eventually throwing her into a wall and attempting to punch her before leaving.
Bicknell was charged with domestic violence, criminal mischief and aggravated trespass and was taken to the Butler County Jail.
Oxford man accused of striking, kicking woman in dispute
Oxford police arrested a 25-year-old Oxford man who allegedly struck his girlfriend in the face and kicked her in the back during a dispute.
Brandon Saylor, 5201 College Corner Pike #71, reportedly got into a heated argument with his 21-year-old live-in girlfriend on Dec. 31 and eventually punched her in the face. The victim fell to the ground, where she told police Saylor kicked her in the back.
When the victim refused to leave the apartment until police arrived, Saylor allegedly grabbed her by the hair and forced her out of the residence.
Officers observed the right side of the victim's face looked as though it had been struck, but were unable to locate Saylor at the site of incident. Saylor was found a short time later as a nearby trailer, but told officers he had been struck in the face by his girlfriend and received a lip injury.
Coincidentally, police had been at the same residence earlier in the evening on reports of Saylor fighting with a different subject, noting he had actually sustained the lip injury during that altercation. Saylor was charged with domestic violence and transported to the Butler County Jail.
Man uses bottles, bricks to assault girlfriend's car
Police apprehended a 22-year-old Hamilton man who admitted to battering his girlfriend's Chevy Blazer with bricks and bottles.
Witnesses told police Daniel Irwin II, 230 S. B St., had caused major damage to the vehicle at around 2:15 a.m. Jan. 3, then informed officers Irwin was hiding on the second level of the Parkview Arms apartment complex. Police located Irwin and ordered him to stay where he was, but report he leapt from a balcony and attempted to run away.
Officers captured Irwin a short time later and placed him under arrest before calling in the Oxford Life Squad for injuries he sustained during his failed escape. Irwin was taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, where he told police he had initially walked into the apartment complex looking for his girlfriend and only began vandalizing her car after they got into an altercation.
An estimated $2,000 in damages were dealt to the vehicle's hood, windshield, passenger window and doors. Irwin was charged with criminal damaging and obstructing official business before police released him to his mother.
