HAMILTON — Hamilton Municipal Court security personnel were able to stop a woman from hanging herself in a holding cell Friday morning, Nov. 21, after her court appearance.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was sentenced by the judge to 15 days in jail for a probation violation, then was taken into custody at about 10:30 a.m., according to Hamilton police Sgt. Tom Kilgour.

While in the cell just off the courtroom in the city building on High Street, the woman attempted to hang herself using her belt, Kilgour said.

"They monitor the holding cells and luckily were able to see what was happening right away," he said.

The woman was transported to The Fort Hamilton Hospital for treatment. No further information was available.
