Boehner hopes gas receipts can spur Congress into action

HAMILTON — Your gas receipts could be used to send a message to federal lawmakers to do something about rising fuel prices.
As a way to spur legislative action, U.S. House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., is asking voters in his district to send him their gas receipts, along with a brief description of how higher fuel prices are impacting their lives and businesses.
In his weekly newsletter sent out Tuesday, Aug. 26, Boehner said he plans to present the receipts to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., when the House reconvenes on Sept. 9.
House Republican leaders have been debating energy legislation without Democrats during the five-week break that started Aug. 1. It's a protest against Pelosi, who refused to bring a comprehensive energy package up for a vote before the recess, said Boehner spokeswoman Jessica R. Towhey.
"Boehner thinks this will be a very effective way to show Pelosi just how much Americans are suffering at the pump," Towhey said.
Towhey said the proposed legislation is all-inclusive, addressing — among other issues — offshore drilling and the exploration of alternative and renewable fuels.
Before Sept. 5, voters in the 8th District are being asked to mail their gas receipts — along with a brief explanation of the impact of high gas prices — to: Gas Receipts c/o Rep. John Boehner, 7969 Cincinnati-Dayton Road, Suite B, West Chester Twp., OH 45069.
