Miami Physics professor honored for research

Jan Yarrison-Rice, professor of physics, has been named Miami University's Sigma Xi Researcher of the Year for 2008.

Yarrison-Rice's research focuses on the physics of nanostructures, investigating the fabrication and optical characterization of nanostructures and devices. In particular, she studies photonic band gap devices, single molecule electronics and semiconductor nanowires.

Her lab group fabricates many of the nanostructures using electron-beam lithographic techniques. She received funding from the National Science Foundation for the electron beam lithography system.

Yarrison-Rice also founded Women in Science Disciplines, Math and Engineering (WISDEM) at Miami, serving female students for more than 15 years.

Sigma Xi is an international scientific and research honor society that supports original work in science and technology. Miami's chapter honors one researcher annually during its spring banquet.
