CINCINNATI — Should voters elect Sen. Barack Obama to become the nation's first minority president, it will not end racism in the United States, according to NAACP Chairman Julian Bond.

Obama, D-Ill., is scheduled to make an appearance at the organization's national convention at 8 p.m., today, July 14. Likely Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is scheduled to make an appearance Wednesday morning, July 16.

Following practices in 2004, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will not endorse a candidate for president, but Bond's comments Sunday night, July 13, about Obama and his criticism of President George W. Bush drew standing ovations from the nearly 2,000 at the Duke Energy Center.

"The country seems proud, and rightly so, that a candidate campaigning in cities where he could not have stayed in a hotel 40 years ago has won his party's nomination for the nation's highest office," Bond said of Obama.

"Such is the complex rhythm of our nation's racial dance," he said. "We know that Obama's electoral success — even if he should win the ultimate prize — will not signal the end of racial discrimination, but it marks the high point of that interracial movement that dates back to the Underground Railroad."

Bond also took aim at Bush Sunday, chiding him for his stance on unity that Bond said was void of action.

"President Bush said he wanted to be a uniter," Bond said. "It took him seven years, but boy, has he succeeded. He has united Americans around a desire for change. He has united Americans in our anxiety — about our economic well being and our dreams deferred; about an unpopular war of choice; and about America's reduced standing in the world."

Following the theme of this year's convention, "Power, Justice, Freedom, Vote!" Bond discussed the important role black voters are expected to play in this year's general election.

Bond cited a 2006 Project Vote survey, which found that 39 percent of eligible blacks and 46 percent of eligible Hispanic Americans are not registered to vote. The number of eligible whites not registered was at 29 percent in 2006.

"If you're not registered to vote, go ahead and bring your charter up to the stage," Bond said. "Because if you're not registered to vote you don't need a branch charter because you're not doing NAACP work."
