7-passenger Buick Enclave offers refined driving, luxurious amenities

It’s weird using the words full-size and crossover together, because a crossover is usually smaller and built on a car platform. My tester for the week, the Buick Enclave, however, can easily be called a full-size luxury crossover.

The Enclave is built on the Lamda unibody platform (the same one shared with the GMC Acadia and the Chevy Traverse). Because of this, and the amount of interior space, you would be forgiven for calling the Enclave an SUV instead.

But, don’t get caught up in categorizing the Enclave. Instead focus on what it is, which is a luxurious, spacious 7-passenger vehicle capable of appeasing everyone in a family.

The Enclave looks large, upholding its full-size billing. Simple, clean sculpting highlights the exterior as well as the trademark waterfall grille, which Buick is known for.

Inside, the Enclave is extraordinary, offering not only fine luxury, but ample space for all passengers.

The curved dash is prominent and draws the eye to the other fine touchpoints like the wood-grain accents and leather seats throughout. Buick has always made a consistent, simple elegant design their focal point, and it is showcased perfectly in the Enclave, right down to the faux Tiffany-style clock on the center mount.

In my tester, the second-row seat came with a DVD entertainment package, for an additional $3,185. It also came with a second-row power sunroof (for another $1,400). Both features, when combined with spacious legroom and headroom, is sure to keep the kiddies happy.

The third row is easily accessed with a push button. Adults can climb into the third row and access the 3-passenger bench seat easily. Legroom is not as an ample in the third row as it is in the second row, but it is still more than adequate, and was better than many other full-size SUVs I’ve driven.

The third row, split-bench seat can fold flat to provide up to 115 cubic feet of cargo space.

New to the Enclave this year is a 6-speed automatic transmission. This aids the 3.6-liter V6 engine which generates 288 horsepower. All together, the Enclave offers a quiet, refined driving experience.

My tester had all-wheel drive, but there is a front-wheel drive option as well, which will offer better fuel economy. The AWD version averaged 19 MPG in a week’s worth of mostly highway driving. It has an EPA rating of 16 city/22 highway. The FWD version gets 17 city/24 highway.

There are four trim lines for the Enclaves. Starting price for the AWD Enclave Base is $39,410. My tester was the Premium trim and came in at $50,970, with several added features.

With the Enclave, Buick has a versatile vehicle that competes against SUVs, crossovers and luxury vehicles.
