Honda will soon hire more employees in Marysville, Ohio, and Greensburg, Ind.

Ed Miller, a Honda of America Manufacturing spokesman, said a second shift will be restored to the company’s Marysville plant production line No. 1, which hasn’t had a second shift since February 2009. And Miller confirmed the automaker will add1,000 employees to its Greensburg, Ind., plant southeast of Indianapolis by the end of the year.

Miller could not immediately say how many employees will be added in Marysville. “The number of jobs is being evaluated,” he said. But the additional shift will be added by the end of this year.

He said even after the earthquake and resulting tsunami in northern Japan in March, the company sees an improving market.

With plants in Marysville, East Liberty and Anna, Honda has about 1,300 employees from the Miami Valley, including about 300 at a Troy distribution center.

The Marysville plant has more than 4,000 employees.

Across Ohio, Honda has more than 13,000 employees.

The Marysville plant makes the Accord, Accord Coupe, Acura TL and Acura RDX. The Indiana plant produces the Civic Sedan and the natural gas-fueled Civic.

Hiring for the Indiana plant will be confined to residents of the plant’s 20-county area, which goes to but not beyond the border with Ohio, Miller noted. Every Honda plant has a hiring area to ensure that employees are close enough to drive to work, Miller said. The Marysville plant has an 18-county area where employees are expected to live, he said. However, the Greensburg plant purchases $1 billion in parts from Ohio each year, he said.
