CENTERVILLE — Once Centerville grabbed the lead, the Elks stood tall and held their ground.
"With two minutes left, we knew we had the game," said Centerville's 6-foot-10 center, Matt Kavanaugh. "We just coasted the rest of the game and enjoyed it."
Centerville (16-3) used a fourth-quarter push to beat the longtime rival Alter Knights 55-41 in boys basketball Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Centerville. The teams had not played since 2005.
"They're a very good team and they did a good job against us defensively," Alter coach Joe Petrocelli said. "They got to the line a lot and rebounded the ball well. Those are tough things to overcome."
Centerville's depth proved to be the difference.
"Everybody we had played their role and played it well," Centerville coach Jim Staley said.
The University of Dayton-bound Kavanaugh led the Elks with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Kavanaugh said it's nothing new to face up against three defenders at once. "They've been doing that for the past three years," said Kavanaugh on facing constant double- and triple-teams.
The Knights' 2-3 zone defense temporarily contained Centerville's post game, but Kavanaugh and fellow senior Adam Replogle punished Alter (12-6) in the paint, each scoring nine points in the first half.
Both teams stepped their defense up in the second half, holding each other scoreless for the first 3:56 of the third period. Alter's Ryan Siggins and Jamarre White entered the fourth quarter with four fouls each, but Siggins stayed aggressive and scored seven of his 15 points in the final period. White fouled out with four points.

Alter's Ryan Siggins shoots under pressure from Elks defender Mike Griffin during the first half Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Centerville. Siggins scored 7 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter for the Knights.
