Indians 'able to do a lot more' heading down stretch
Fairfield has battled through inexperience and is looking for a strong end to the regular season.

The Fairfield boys volleyball team, whose 10-man roster includes five players that are new to the sport, endured its inevitable early season struggles.
At 6-7 (3-5 Greater Miami Conference) entering the final week of the regular season, Fairfield boys volleyball coach Mike Berkemeier can at least say "the confusion part is over."

Get latest headlines via RSS feeds"We've made a lot of improvements, although it may not show in the win column," Berkemeier said. "We're running a much more complex offense. We're able to do a lot more because they're understanding the game better."
The Indians were competitive against three formidable opponents — Sycamore, Centerville and Mason — but consistently failed to pull out close games. In those three matches, they lost all nine sets despite scoring an average of 18.5 points per set.
"We're playing tight with the big teams," Berkemeier said.
"Now we gotta come through with the big game-winning shot. We've been a couple points away in most of those games."
Berkemeier has made a couple alterations to his lineup. Senior outside hitter Scott Vanover has moved to the right side, while sophomore Cameron Terrell has moved up from JV to platoon at outside hitter with junior Joey Meinerding and senior Jon Wilkerson.
Vanover has been a prolific server this season, leading the GMC in aces (50).
Senior libero Greg Leadbetter has been solid all season on the backline, ranking fourth in the GMC in digs (179).
Vanover's not far behind with 144.
Senior setter Jay Stempfley ranks sixth in assists (291).
Fairfield plays three home nonconference games against McNicholas today, May 8; Roger Bacon on Monday; and Elder on Wednesday, to wrap up its regular season.
