A year ago, Mason High's softball team advanced to the Final Four despite a losing record and holding the No. 6 seed.

A year later, the Comets have a better record — 16-7 — but managed just the No. 7 seed in Sunday's sectional superdraw.

But that doesn't mean Mason can't make another deep postseason run.

"I would like to think so," Mason coach Brian Castner said. "But we're going to take it one game at a time, one pitch at a time, and see if we can get these girls to believe that they can play with every team."

The Comets open up against either No. 15 Northwest (13-9) or No. 20 McAuley (8-13) at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Fairfield.

No. 4 Harrison (19-4), No. 14 Little Miami (17-8) or No. 25 Oak Hills (5-14) would be Mason's opponent in the sectional finals at 3:30 p.m. May 16 at Fairfield.

"The competition is a lot better, more balanced across the board," Castner said. "We're wanting to finish up this week and get into the second-season mode.

"I always like our chances when we're paying well," he added. "I think we're playing better than we were at the beginning of the year, and hopefully we keep that going."

Mason baseball No. 3 seed in sectional

The Comets (13-9) are the No. 3 seed in the Cincinnati 2 sectional, and will open up against familiar foe Princeton (11-9), the No. 5 seed, at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Mason.

Mason swept the season series from the Vikings 5-2 and 7-0.

"They're a good ball club," Mason coach Ken Gray said. "We know we have to be ready to play that day to win the game."

No. 2 Lakota East (13-8), No. 7 Edgewood (15-8) or No. 9 Fairfield (7-13) would be the Comets' opponent in the sectional finals May 16.

"We're in a pretty decent spot," Gray said. "We can play with any one of those teams. If you look at the 11 teams in that sectional, it's as good as any sectional in the state of Ohio. It's just loaded.

"It's a coin toss. It's who's ready to play that day."
